PROGRESSIVE GLIMPSES OF AICMA AND ITS MEMBERS
MOVE – Global Mobility Summit held at Vigyan Bhawan on 7-8
Sept 2018 at Delhi

Speech of Mr Pankaj Munjal , Chairman HMC & Sr Member of AICMA
at MOVE – Global Mobility Summit held at Vigyan Bhawan on 7-8 Sept 2018 at Delhi , which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India .

The speech on incredible role and sustainable importance of Cycling for India received high and wider appreciation. The same is circulated further in written form by the AICMA for those who could not attend the Summit. The speech reads as:

“1.Honorable Prime Minister of India, dignitaries, ladies and gentlemen.
It’s an honour to be standing here to talk on this subject that I love so much, for not that I am born in a family associated with wheels for 60 years, but that our business can’t go against the grain of society and nature.

2. India consumes 35 Lakh cars, 2.5 Crore motorcycles but only 1.5 Crore bicycles. Penetration in India is 67 bicycles / 1000 households vs. Europe of 800. This is not in line with Global Trends. Ladies and gentlemen, even today 32 cr. people walk to work, to school, or commute for up to 6 kms, daily. Because they can’t afford even a cycle. A study reveals that if 12% of them get wheels, GDP goes up by a percentage point.

3. Owning a cycle is like investing in business.
In a village one delivers milk,to the milk plant,
He transports clothes that his wife stitched to a store and makes a living out of it.

4.In Modern India, we face 4 social issues.
-Urban congestion
-Urban Pollution
– Depletion of Fossil fuel
-And deteriorating Health.
A bicycle remedies them all

5.What does the future of transportation look like?
I do realise, that this room is full of leaders of global automotive industry, and what I am going to say, may not exactly excite you, but I come with a world class solution for the masses of India.

6.Surely the solution is not where poor will drive cars? Even if the car is clean, it still creates a jam. One drives to the gym for spinning a cycle. We love our own car, but hate the other for creating traffic.

7.Prime Minister sir, the youth of the country today looks up to you, as a role model, guiding them for a brighter tomorrow. You are identified with large intervention programs, that are transforming the core of our nation. Swatch Bharat and Swastha Bharat, where the bicycle can play a meaningful role.

8.We feel very excited to share, the introduction of our E bike, the ‘Lectro’. The running cost of Lectro is ₹7 / 100 kms. A motor is now being fixed on each platform and we are working to roll out one million units a year.

9.Is a humble bicycle, an e – bike a part of the solution for intra city commute?.
I submit, it is. Hero makes 5% of the world’s bi-cycle production, 6mn in numbers and my mission is to make most electric

10.Sir, to sum-up 3 things are required.
– Micro finance.
– Safety on roads.
– Integrate last mile connectivity of with bicycles.
With these in place, we can achieve the 1% additional GDP growth.
Jai hind”

TI Cycles rolls out Belgian brand of premium cycles
ti-news

(From left) Richard Craig Wittenberg, VP, Operations, Ridley Bikes; L Ramkumar, MD, Tube Investments; Joachim Aerts, CEO, Ridley Bikes; and Arun Alagappan, President, TI Cycles.

Cycling enthusiasts will now get chance to own a Ridley, a high-end, professional brand, with TI Cycles launching a specially made-for-India range.

TI Cycles formally launched the Belgian brand of cycles here following a 33-year licensing agreement between the company and Ridley signed last year.

Arun Alagappan, President, TI Cycles, said the India range of models will be available from June at a price range of Rs.25,000 to over Rs.80,000. It will launch 11 models including hybrids, mountain bikes and road bikes.

In addition, they will also launch a fleet of 14 models of Ridley cycles directly imported from Belgium priced between Rs.63,000 and Rs.7.8 lakh, including the Noah SL, the model that made a mark in the Tour De France, the 3,500-km cycle race. Ridley cycles won four stages in the multistage race.

The licensing agreement between the Murugappa Group company and the Belgian company looks beyond marketing to collaborating on developing bicycles for India. The objective will be to offer the performance of professional biking at Indian prices, he said.

L Ramkumar, Managing Director, Tube Investments, of which TI Cycles is a division, said the launch of the Ridley is in line with the evolving trends in cycling as enthusiasts look for improved performance matching professional cycling. Cycling clubs have proliferated in major cities and buyers are continuously looking for more. Joachim Aerts, CEO, Ridley Bikes, also unveiled a Helium SL, specially styled in the Indian tricolour, priced at Rs.6.75 lakh.

Aerts said Ridley is a technology-oriented company that looks continuously to innovate. In April, it will launch an open innovation centre, in which even companies other than in cycling will participate to provide technology that will upgrade performance.
